My name is Michael Girardo. I would not consider myself a techie, but a user of machines. I use Windows based computers for office work and business work and Macs for creative work like video editing and graphic arts. There are many times I wished Windows stuck with XP or something like it. Windows 7 comes in close to XP and many other people would agree with that. I also wish that Apple would stop upgrading their OS to the point that older software gets sluggish and unable to work.
My Story with Windows 8.1
I saw a really good deal on a Laptop that came with Windows 8.1 and it was supposed to be ready for Windows 10. When I bought the Windows 8.1 machine, my plan was to upgrade to Windows 10. It had such a small hard drive I figured I would just use flash drives for files and upgrade later. Even though it was advertised as “Ready for Windows 10”, the hard drive could not accommodate the upgrade. Even when plugging in the flash drive to do the install, it failed. I later tried getting a new hard drive, only to find out that the laptop is completely unable to be upgraded. Yes, a Windows based machine with pieces soldered on. I decided to updated Windows 8.1 fully and was left with about 100mb on my hard drive. Needless to say, I was unhappy and looked for ways to go back to Windows 7.
My Story with Windows 10
After getting a pretty useless machine with Windows 8.1 that would have converted into a paperweight if I did not turn it into a Windows 7 computer, I decided to buy a Windows 10 computer and actually spend some money on it. At first I liked it. It seemed to combine some good stuff from Windows 8.1 and then do some cool tricks. But it got annoying and became too much. For the record, I do have a Windows 10 machine just in case I need it for future software. I am not a fan of it and put Windows 7 on the one in question. Windows 10 is just simply too busy and has too many bells and whistles I never use. Cortana? Live tiles? Whatever this thing is called that has multiple desktops to scroll through that I will never use? I just want an OS that will run my programs. Windows XP and Windows 7 did their jobs and didn’t bog things down so badly.
My Future With Windows
Most experts insist Windows 10 will be the final Windows OS and will be updated forever. I hope that does not true and that soon we get something closer to Windows 7 or at least a “Windows Lite Edition” or something like that. If that does not happen, I will transition to a Mac completely, which I don’t want to do. My only reason for sticking with Apple was Final Cut Pro which they totally ruined and turned into iMovie Pro. But Macs work and are more stable in my experience. I may go Linux or something Linux based. There are many options with Linux and tons of variations with a lot of user support.
Why I Made This Site
For now, Windows 7 is the best Windows alternative to Windows 8, 8.1 or 10. There are many people that want to know how to go back to Windows 7 without reinstalling or buying/rebuying the install discs or product key if possible. I made this little site as a resource for them.
